The Series

[Rating:3/5]

The premiere episode of the third season of this Comedy Central half-hour comedy series sees this trio of twenty-something slackers heading off to a convention where they drop acid, trip their butts off with their boss Alice (Maribeth Monroe) and end up in a hotel room with a couple of male strippers grinding their junk in their faces. It’s an opening volley to a season that is over the top and filled with the usual rude, crude, and puerile humor that this fast-paced series, no doubt with roots that stem all the way back to Seinfeld, and more recently, Arrested Development, is known for. Similar to other series on commercial cable such as The League and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Workaholics obviously skews slightly younger than either of those, though one would be hard-pressed to tell given the level of drug and sexual-related humor of any of the series.

This season sees the three roommates and less-than-productive employees of TelAmeriCorp trying to get parking at their new office’s extra handicapped parking spot by convincing Adam’s (Adam DeVine) morbidly obese, handicapped cousin to work their and use his permit for them. It also finds them dropping their regular drug dealer for a sexy new, up-scaled dealer (Rumer Willis) who turns out to be quite dangerous.

As with the previous season 1 & 2 release on Blu-ray of Workaholics, this one comes completely uncensored, or, as it says on the packaging, paradoxically, “there are no bleeps in this b**ch”. I don’t know if the lack of censorship helps the comedy any, but the third season is reasonably humorous, but certainly not consistent in anyway. This series still doesn’t quite reach the same level of raw humor and quality that The League or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia manage to do.

Video Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Workaholics-S3-BD_01

For a half-hour comedy series on cable television, Workaholics looks good. You’ll not get a high amount of visual effects and nuance in the image, but the AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encodement is detailed, rich in midtones, and does have nuanced shadow detail. Most of all, it is a big step up over the original broadcasts.

Audio Quality

[Rating:4/5]

Workaholics-S3-BD_03

Given the genre requirements and the format of this television series, the English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack supplied with Workaholics is a strong mix with full sound, clean dialogue, and reasonably good amounts of atmospherics in the surround channels.

Supplemental Materials

The Definitive Word

Overall:

[Rating:3.5/5]

Workaholics-S3-BD_05

Another outing for this wild, outrageous and purposely offensive comedy series yields the occasional belly laugh and “I CANNOT believe they did that!” On the whole, however, this semi-improvised comedy has stronger counterparts. It’ll still be worth it for many fans who are totally committed to the meta aspects of the comedy these three (Blake Anderson; Adam DeVine; Anders Holm) put out.
