The Film

Wreck-It Ralph is the kind of movie, with its video game plot, that one might think would’ve been made years ago. After all, it’s main character Ralph (John C. Reilly) is a video game villain, and video game popularity is at an all-time high. Serving as the villain for Fix-It Felix, Jr., Ralph yearns for a world where he just might be able to be the good guy. Hoping to prove to everyone that he has what it takes to be a true hero, Ralph soon finds himself facing a more dangerous enemy than he has ever seen. Now Ralph must figure out how to save the entire arcade world before it’s too late. What results is a visually dazzling, quite funny, animated effort from the folks at Walt Disney.

Charming, funny, yet occasionally serious in tone, at times Walt Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph can be compared to Disney classics like Aladdin, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast. While it’s not as great as some of these aforementioned films, Ralph works on nearly every single level. The voice acting, particularly that of John C. Reilly as Ralph, is top notch. Reilly, especially in the HIGHLY underrated Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, captures the essence of Ralph. Big, brooding, clumsy, yet still able to show his heart, it seems as if Ralph was built for an actor like Reilly.

Outside of the acting realm, the other real delight here is the animation in and of itself. Bright and colorful, Wreck-It Ralph is the kind of film that will find its way not into just the hearts of kids, but also the hearts of adults, regardless of their age. Sitting here typing this, I’m about to be 28 and you know what, there were numerous times throughout Ralph that I found myself thinking back to my childhood. Back to the time when I played the video games that featured these characters. That, my friends, is the pure definition of quality animation. The kind of animation that brings you back to the tender time of your life, the tender time called childhood.

The film’s 2:39:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded 2D transfer is absolutely stunning, something we’ve come to expect from modern day animated efforts. With this being such a colorful, vibrant film, it really shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise that colors pop off the screen. Whether darker moments where blacks are inky and ring accurate, or brighter sequences, each and every moment is breathtaking. Speaking of stunning, texture detail is downright excellent. Just pause any wide shot and smile at what is shown. Also, no other anomalies like DNR, macroblocking or any video encode issues, are present.

Equally strong is the film’s included 3D presentation. A majority of ‘3D pop’ comes thanks to the film’s extensive use of wide, swooping movements; you know the sequences where we’re given exterior looks at the worlds presented. It’s here that the aforementioned ‘pop’ really impressed with convincing 3D elements. Nothing feels overly forced like other 3D gimmicks. Depending on your set, occasional 3D issues like ghosting, may rear its head. (NOTE – I tested this on my 55″ Sony and a separate 65″ Panasonic and noticed a bit of crosstalk on my set.) Just so you know, this is more an issue with my display versus the actual film – as I didn’t notice any problems on the Panasonic set. Due to this, I won’t fault the overall image quality.)

All in all, choose your medicine – just know either presentation is excellent.

Audio Quality

Wreck-It Ralph hits the arcade world with an excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless mix. Dialogue, of which is typically funny thanks in part to a wonderful performance by Reilly, is well reproduced via the center channel. During the initial opening sequences, showcase a rather happy, bumbling world full of varying sound effects. Once we move into the darker side of the video game picture, LFE rears its head, giving us deep, immersive low-end. Directionality between fronts and rears are seamless helping to create a solid 360-degree sound field. All in all, akin to that of the video presentation, this lossless effort is perfect.

Charming, funny, and wonderfully cast, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph brought me back to that tender part of my life called childhood. Simply put the film is sweet, and touching at times. Equally great is Disney’s Blu-ray technical effort, despite the minimal features. Families, friends – heck everyone – add this one to your growing collections.
