The Film
[Rating:3/5]
I’ve been a fan of Kristen Bell ever since her days portraying a teenage gumshoe in TV’s Veronica Mars. She even had an excellent recurring role as a bad guy on the faltering series Heroes before that show got the axe. Unfortunately, with all of her innate charm and undeniable beauty, Bell’s big screen roles have been underwhelming to say the least. She seems to be squandering all her potential in mediocre, almost trite productions like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Couples Retreat.
Despite its overwhelming cast of heavyweights, You Again is really no different. It’s like Mean Girls without the bite, the Disneyland version of a “girly” feud that never heats up beyond a few dishes being thrown and some food-fighting.
Kristen Bell is Marnie, a twenty-something PR agent who’s just been promoted to VP of her firm’s New York office. She’s young, successful, and attractive, a far cry from the pimply-faced, gawky teenager who was terrorized in high school by all the pretty, popular girls. But Marnie is in for the shock of her life, when she finds out her older brother is about to marry her high school nemesis “J.J” (Odette Yustman), now going by “Joanna” and pretending she doesn’t remember Marnie.
The good girl versus bad girl feud doesn’t end there either. It seems Joanna’s aunt (Sigourney Weaver) is the high school nemesis of Marnie’s mom (Jamie Lee Curtis). Let the feuding, outrageous situations, and hullabaloo begin as Marnie sets out to expose Joanna as a fraud and her mom picks up the old feud with Joanna’s aunt. Even grandma (Betty White) gets into the act later on with her own feud.
Unfortunately, despite providing some consistent chuckles here and there, You Again is tame; too neat and tidy to amount to much in the end. Its clean, tightly wrapped up denouement is obvious and the overall mood is more sugary sweet than ruthless.
Video Quality
[Rating:5/5]
You Again looks great on Blu-ray for a film of this ilk. It’s not filled with lots special effects or intricate lighting that show off well in high definition, but its 2.35:1 AVC/MPEG-4 1080p encoding is sharp, clean, and full of vibrant colors and strong textures with a thin layer of grain that is consistent and imparts a film-like appearance.
Audio Quality
[Rating:3.5/5]
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack for You Again is on the boring side, being very front-heavy and dialogue driven. There’s not much activity in the surround channels, but the sub does come alive during a couple of the dance sequences.

The Definitive Word
Overall:
[Rating:3.5/5]
A cast of all-stars and the charming Kristen Bell plus a reference high definition transfer on Blu-ray make this mildly amusing, but timid comedy worthy of a rental.
